extent solely with foreign trained technicians and already
her own Universities are training students for the purpose.
But these Universities themselves must turn either to
American or to English science for advice and assistance.
American scientific teaching, in many Universities is not of
IS good quality and in others too specialized and there will be
no difficulty in establishing the superiority of British
science in the East if ably and energetically taught and
advertised. For this purpose the University of Hong Kong
is uniquely situated and has before it a great opportunity.
It ought to become the centre from which the Chinese
Universities draw their teachers and to which they undoubted-
ly should look for information, advice, and help. If this
were to happen the results upon the relationships of China
and this country could hardly fail to be beneficial.
Four years ago I went to Hong Kong to take up the newly
created post of Reader in Biology. In addition to my
ordinary teaching work in the University I have striven to
make my department of Hong Kong University a centre of
information on the Biological sciences and an agency for the
propagation of such knowledge. Since I went there I have
achieved something in this direction, but an enormous field
remains to be attempted.
